Our Story
My journey with Treeing Walker Coonhounds started when I got my first coonhound from Jessica McRae as a pet and show prospect. What started as an interest in having a dog to enjoy and show grew into a much deeper appreciation for the breed and everything these dogs are capable of.
The more time I spent with Treeing Walkers, the more I fell in love with their combination of intelligence, drive, athleticism, and temperament. I wanted to be involved in preserving the qualities that make this breed special while producing dogs that can actually live up to the purpose they were bred for.
Today, our dogs are part of our everyday lives. We hunt, show, train, compete, and live with them. Our goal isn’t simply to produce a dog that looks good in a show ring. We want dogs with the structure and movement to be functional, the natural ability and drive to hunt, and the stable, biddable temperaments that make them enjoyable to live with. To us, a good Treeing Walker should be able to do the job, represent the breed well, and come home and be part of the family.

The Breed
About the Treeing Walker Coonhound
The Treeing Walker Coonhound is an American hunting breed developed to pursue and tree raccoon. They are athletic, intelligent, driven dogs with a strong desire to hunt and work, but they can also be affectionate and engaging companions when their physical and mental needs are met.
Treeing Walkers are not a breed for everyone. They can be vocal, energetic, independent, and intensely interested in following their nose. They do best with owners who understand the needs of a hunting hound and are willing to provide appropriate exercise, training, structure, and enrichment.
One of the things we love most about the breed is its versatility. A well-rounded Treeing Walker can be a hunting partner, a show dog, a performance competitor, or simply a loved family companion. We believe those qualities should complement each other rather than breeding for one at the expense of the others.
At 3 Color Kennels, our breeding program is centered around producing functional, structurally sound Treeing Walkers with good temperaments and natural hunting ability. Our dogs are expected to be more than pretty in a show ring. They should be capable of doing the job their breed was created to do and enjoyable to live with when the day’s work is done.
